The Syracuse Titans (5-0-0, 1-0-0) began the bruising Region I schedule with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Northridge Knights (2-3-0, 0-1-0). The game was previously scheduled to be played on Northridge’s home field but due to field issues the home sites were flipped for the season. In Region opening games the Titans have now evened their overall opening record for the first time in school history at 6 wins and 6 losses.
This was the 20th meeting between the two schools, the 3rd most played match-up in school history (behind Davis and Layton). The Titans extended their lead in the overall series between the two schools to 10 wins , 8 losses and 2 ties.
The Caroline Stringfellow to Ashlyn Hall combination continues to be a hot one as the two 2017 All Staters combined once again to get the game started quickly in the 12′. Hall, a junior, recorded her 6A leading 7th goal of the season (47th career). For Stringfellow it was her 4th assist of the season (36th career – school record).
In the second half Junior Center Back Kelsey Steed recorded her 1st goal of the season (3rd career) from a scramble in the box off another Stringfellow cross. The defender Steed has now scored in every single year of her career. Senior Adriana Owen capped the scoring for the Titans in the 70′ (2nd year, 4th career).
Other assists on the day were provided by Junior Defender Jenna Kelly (1st season, 3rd career) and Sophomore Defender Baylee Sanders got her first career assist on the final tally. The win was a total team effort with 6 different girls earning points in the win. Brooklyn Stringfellow earned the shutout in net (2.5 season/career) and got her 3rd win of the season. The back line of Madi Dee, Porter Brown, Jenna Kelly, Kelsey Steed and Baylee Sanders helped anchor the 4th shutout of the young season.
The Titans outshot the Knights 15 to 10, putting more on frame as well, 11 to 4. It was a season high shots on frame percentage for the Titans a rate of 73%. ‘Cuse led on corner kicks, 7 to 4, and had less fouls than the visiting team.
The Syracuse JV (3-2-0, 1-0-0) squad got back to their winning ways with a 1-0 win. Sophomore Virginia Wallace netted her 3rd JV goal of the season. The assist came from Freshman Mia Hammond, her 2nd assist of the year.
Next up for the Titans they host the Clearfield Falcons (1-2-1, 0-0-0) in the highway 193 rivalry. This is the 14th overall meeting between the two schools separated by only 3 miles. The game will be played at Titan Field, Thursday August 23rd @ 3:30 pm. Come #fillthehill !
