The rain held off just long enough for the Syracuse Titans (16-1-0, 11-1-0) to finish the first round of the 6A playoffs in style. In a 50 minute mercy, the home team defeated the #4 seeded Kearns Cougars by a score of 12-0.
It was a fast and furious start for the Titans as they put in 8 goals in the first 16 minutes of the game. Sophomore Caroline Stringfellow led all goal scorers with 4 on the day (22 season, 51 career). Stringfellow also recorded the game winning goal, her 7th of the season (11 career). Junior Ashlyn Hall recorded her first hat trick of the season, her 6th career trick and her second career postseason hat trick. That moves Hall to 19 goals on the season (59 career). Junior Sarah Wynn added the brace for ‘Cuse (7 goals season, 20 career). Additional goals were provided by Junior Kelsey Steed (2 season, 4 career), Senior Adriana Owen (10 season, 12 career) and Freshman Claire Colquitt (3rd season/career). This was the second consecutive season that a freshman has scored in the playoffs for the Titans.
Sarah Wynn and Lauren Burnett were the assists leaders on the day with 3 a piece. The Junior Wynn’s season total continues to lead the state with 19 (30 career). Burnett, a senior has 8 assists on the season (14 career). Other assists were provided by Hall with 2 (9 season, 39 career), Stringfellow with 2 (16 season, 48 career), Owen got her first assist of the season (7th career), Junior Jenna Kelly (3rd season, 5th career), Colquitt (4th season/career), Steed (4th season, 8th career), and Junior Madi Dee (3rd season, 5th career). The assist total of 15 is a new single game SHS School record for the Titans.
Senior goalkeeper Brooklyn Stringfellow earned her 7.5 shutout in net. Aided by the backline of Porter Brown, Jenna Kelly, Kelsey Steed, Madi Dee, Baylee Sanders, Evee Augustine, Riley King and Keelee Cella.
The Titans outshot the Cougars 40-0, including more shots on goal 27-0. They had more corner kicks 5-0. A record number 24 players played in the playoff game. A school record and a new postseason record. This years senior class hit their 50th win in their 4 years of play with the win Tuesday.
It was the third time hosting a playoff game in school history for Syracuse and the first overall meeting between the two schools. This was the second straight season the Titans were the #1 seed and due to that will now get to host a second round playoff game. The Titans will have a quarterfinal rematch from 2017 against the Pleasant Grove Vikings (8-8-0, 5-7-0). This will be the second overall meeting between the two schools. They will meet on Titan field Thursday at 4 pm.
