For the second straight season the Syracuse Titans (17-1-0, 11-1-0) made their way back to the 6A semi finals. For the second straight season it had to come through a tough quarterfinal match up against the Pleasant Grove Vikings (8-9-0, 5-7-0).
After a disallowed goal for Freshman Claire Colquitt in the first half, the two teams fought to a 0-0 tie at halftime, then ‘Cuse took charge from there. In the second stanza the Titans dominated possession and shots to control the game.
In the 58’ Junior defender Madi Dee found Sophomore Sarah Wynn eventually finding the foot of Junior Ashlyn Hall for the game winning goal. Wynn continues to lead the state with 20 assists on the year (31 career), Dee had her 4th assist of the season, 6th career. It was Hall’s 20th goal of the season (60th career) and her 7th game winning goal of the season, and team leading 17th career game winning goal.
The backline of Porter Brown, Jenna Kelly, Baylee Sanders, Kelsey Steed and Madi Dee kept the Vikings at bay for much of the second half. This is the 12th shutout of the season for the young backline, continuing to set the new school record for the back line. Senior Goalkeeper Brooklyn Stringfellow secured her 8.5 shutout of the season, now the new 6A leader among goalies, having shared an additional 3.5 shutouts with teammate and senior Goalkeeper Briget Wallace. This was Stringfellow’s 12th win of the season/career.
The Titans and Vikings had an equal amount of shots on the day at 13, but ‘Cuse put more on frame 7-3.
Next up is the state semifinals against the Lone Peak Knights (14-3-0, 9-3-0). The two teams will meet for the very first overall meeting between the two schools. They will play at Juan Diego High School on Tuesday at 3:45 pm. A spirit bus will be available for students that wish to go down to the game, see the main office for details.
