Add another wild game to the SHS girls 2019 soccer season. The Syracuse Titans (11-3-0, 9-3-0 Region 1) overcame a 2-1 deficit defeating the league leading Northridge Knights (11-2-1, 9-2-1) for the second time this season by a score of 4-2.
4 Different Titans scored with ‘Cuse scoring 3 goals in a two and a half minute span in the games final five minutes for the victory. The win sent our most successful senior class (check it out under history on the main menu) out in style in their last regular season home game of their careers.
Caroline Stringfellow opened the scoring off of corner kick in the seventh minute (15 season, 66 career). The knights took the lead right before halftime and the game held scoreless in the second half for 35 minutes. Sarah Wynn & Stringfellow combined on the counter attack where Caroline was fouled in the box earning the PK. Senior forward Ashlyn Hall punched in the tying goal (20 season, 80 career).
Less than two minutes later Freshman forward Abby Schofield found the game winning goal, her career first. Fellow freshman, Cortney Cobabe, fought through a knight defender and sent Schofield on the through ball. Schofield punched in her 6th goal of the season. Junior forward Sarah Wynn added the insurance goal one minute later, with the final tally for the Titans (7 season, 27 career).
Assists on the day came from Hall (14 season, 53 career) and Cobabe (2 season / career). The shot count was in favor of the knights 16-15, while Syracuse put more on frame 9-8. Stringfellow, Hall and Wynn all led the team in shots with 3 a piece. Hall, Schofield and Stringfellow each led the team putting 2 on frame. Junior goalkeeper London Ewing earned the victory (5.5 career). She recorded 8 saves and 11 defensive plays on the day. The Titans continue to lead the overall series 13-8-2.
The Syracuse JV team (10-2-2), with two games left, set a new single season wins record for a Titan JV team with the 2-0 victory over Northridge. Sophomore forward Autumn Hogan (3 season) and Sophomore forward Skylee Hopkins (4 season) each scored in the victory. Assists were provided by Sophomore forward Tatum Williams (5 season) and Junior midfielder Lydia Steele (2 season).
The Titans will finish the season with two road games next week. Tuesday, October 1, they go visit Layton High at 3:30 pm. The Lancers (9-4-1, 7-4-1) defeated the Titans in the first game of the 2019 series 4-3 in the first game of the region schedule. This is the 26th meeting between the two schools, with LHS holding a 18-7 advantage.
